Our original <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/segment-anything.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Segment Anything Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released last year inspired new AI-enabled image editing tools in our apps, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/09\/introducing-ai-powered-assistants-characters-and-creative-tools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backdrop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/05\/new-stickers-in-instagram-stories\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutouts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Instagram. SAM has also catalyzed diverse applications in science, medicine and numerous other industries. For example, SAM has been used in marine science to segment <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2306.14109\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sonar images<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2310.01946\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyze coral reefs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/pretrained-models\/latest\/imagery\/introduction-to-segment-anything-model-sam-.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">satellite imagery analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for disaster relief, and in the medical field, segmenting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/CellSAM-a-foundational-model-for-cell-segmentation-CellSAMcombines-SAMs-mask_fig1_375792204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cellular images<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and aiding in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2304.13973\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detecting skin cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our new Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2) extends these capabilities to video. SAM 2 can segment any object in an image or video, and consistently follow it across all frames of a video in real-time. Existing models have fallen short in enabling this as segmentation in video is significantly more challenging than in images. In videos, objects can move fast, change in appearance and be concealed by other objects or parts of the scene. We solved many of these challenges in building SAM 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"jetpack-slideshow-noscript robots-nocontent\">This slideshow requires JavaScript.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We believe this research can unlock new possibilities such as easier video editing and generation, and allow new experiences to be created in mixed reality. SAM 2 could also be used to track a target object in a video to aid in faster annotation of visual data for training computer vision systems, including the ones used in autonomous vehicles. It could also enable creative ways of selecting and interacting with objects in real-time or in live videos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping with our open science approach, we\u2019re sharing our research on SAM 2 so others can explore new capabilities and use cases.
