We call this feature, third-party chats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following successful small scale tests over the past months, the option for WhatsApp users to chat with users of messaging apps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdy.chat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BirdyChat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/haiket.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Haiket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> directly via third-party chats will soon be rolling out across <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/523679699550284\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This marks a significant milestone in Meta\u2019s compliance with the EU\u2019s Digital Markets Act (DMA) interoperability requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WhatsApp users in Europe, who have opted in to the experience across Android and iOS, will be able to share messages, images, voice messages, videos and files. The option to create groups with third-party users will become available once our partners are ready to support this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Privacy first approach to interoperability\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meta\u2019s partnerships with BirdyChat and Haiket is a result of more than three years of work with European messaging services and the European Commission to build a solution to third-party chats that meets the requirements of the DMA, while preserving privacy and security for users as much as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This follows three core principles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Protecting user security and privacy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In line with DMA requirements, third-party messaging apps must use the same level of E2EE as WhatsApp.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Clear and simple experience: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve provided users with a simple onboarding experience, while ensuring they understand the main differences between chats on WhatsApp and third-party chats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Available to European users:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In line with DMA requirements, third-party chats will be available to people in the European Region.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For WhatsApp users, connecting with people on other messaging apps is optional and third-party chats can be turned on or off at any time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have built third-party interoperability, maintaining E2EE and other privacy guarantees in our services as far as possible.<\/span> Read<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> more about the technical infrastructure and thinking that sits behind the third-party chats feature in ou<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">r <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2024\/03\/06\/security\/whatsapp-messenger-messaging-interoperability-eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">previous engineering blog on the topic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What users will see<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the coming months, WhatsApp users in the European Region will start to see a notification in the Settings tab on WhatsApp. This will explain how they can opt-in to connect with people on third-party apps.
