But this oversimplifies a serious issue. Clinicians and researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/read\/27396\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that mental health is a deeply complex and multifaceted issue, and trends regarding teens\u2019 well-being aren\u2019t clear-cut or universal. Narrowing the challenges faced by teens to a single factor ignores the scientific research and the many stressors impacting young people today, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2807435#:~:text=From%202016%20to%202021%2C%20the,to%20increasing%20trends%20in%202021.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2785658\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school safety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(12)61910-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">socio-economic challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaltherapeutics.com\/article\/S0149-2918(19)30308-X\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this complexity, plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers have selectively cited Meta\u2019s internal documents to construct a misleading narrative, suggesting our platforms have harmed teens and that Meta has prioritized growth over their well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These claims don\u2019t reflect reality. The evidence will show a company deeply and responsibly confronting tough questions, conducting research, listening to parents, academics, and safety experts, and taking action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Our Record of Supporting Parents and Teens<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most teens today use social media to stay close to friends and family, express themselves, build community, and find support if they need it. Still, we recognize and share parents\u2019 concerns around teens having safe, age-appropriate experiences on social media. That\u2019s why we want to collaborate with parents to help teens use social media in a meaningful way, with the right protections, oversight, and guardrails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, we\u2019ve listened to parents and our community to understand the challenges they\u2019re facing and respond with new tools, features, and resources to support them. For example:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, we built integrated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2017\/03\/building-a-safer-community-with-new-suicide-prevention-tools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide prevention tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support those who may be struggling.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, when we saw the need for faster access to support, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/blog\/announcements\/an-important-step-towards-better-protecting-our-community-in-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed intelligent ways <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to share resources with people searching for suicide or self-injury content.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/03\/continuing-to-make-instagram-safer-for-the-youngest-members-of-our-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restricted adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from starting private chats with teens they\u2019re not connected to on Instagram and Messenger. We also announced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/07\/instagram-safe-and-private-for-young-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">default private account settings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for users under 16 in the US (and 18 in some countries) when they sign up for Instagram, as well as notifications encouraging teens under 16 already on Instagram to switch to a private account.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, we began <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/06\/parental-supervision-and-teen-time-management-on-metas-apps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prompting teens to take time away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from our apps and enable them to set daily limits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, we launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/09\/instagram-teen-accounts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram Teen Accounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with built-in protections to limit who can contact them and the content they see, and give parents the ability to set time limits. And in 2025, we expanded them to Facebook and Messenger.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/07\/expanding-teen-account-protections-child-safety-features\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional protections to Instagram Teen Accounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including safety features in DMs, giving teens more information about who they\u2019re chatting with.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/10\/instagram-teen-accounts-13-movie-ratings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revamped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instagram Teen Accounts content settings, inspired by 13+ movie ratings. This means that teens will see content on Instagram similar to what they\u2019d see in an age-appropriate movie, by default. Teens can\u2019t opt out of this default setting without a parent\u2019s permission, and we\u2019ve also introduced an even stricter setting for parents who prefer a more restrictive experience for their teen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in 2025, we went further to address online bullying in schools by giving teachers, educators, and administrators a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/03\/instagram-partnership-schools-teachers-address-bullying\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prioritized system for reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instances of teen safety issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, as concerns about AI safety emerged, we announced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/10\/teen-ai-safety-approach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protections for teens in our AI products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including designing them to respond safely to prompts about self-harm, suicide, and disordered eating. We also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/10\/teen-ai-safety-approach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we\u2019d introduce new controls that let parents see how their teens are interacting with AI.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just some of the protections we\u2019ve built for teens to give parents peace of mind that their teens have automatic restrictions in place. Parents know their teens best and should have the final say over how they engage with technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familycenter.meta.com\/supervision\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents can use supervision features<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to set their teens\u2019 time to as little as 15 minutes a day, block usage at certain times throughout the day, see who their teens are messaging, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also collaborate with law enforcement, experts, and our industry peers to address potential threats and develop educational programs to empower teens and parents to take control of their online experience. This includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/takeitdown.ncmec.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take It Down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tool that helps prevent teens\u2019 intimate images from being shared online.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launching <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/10\/instagram-campaign-protect-teens-sextortion-scams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awareness campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to educate teens and their parents on sextortion, and working with Childhelp on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/02\/meta-child-launch-curriculum-help-students-avoid-online-exploitation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-of-its-kind safety curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for US middle schoolers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with the Tech Coalition as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/11\/lantern-program-protecting-children-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founding member of the Lantern program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which allows participating companies to share signals about predatory accounts so they can all investigate and take action.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We cooperate with law enforcement by alerting them when we become aware of someone at imminent risk of harm and responding to valid legal requests for information. In 2024, we received over 9,000 emergency requests from US authorities and resolved them within an average of 67 minutes \u2014 and even more quickly for cases involving child safety and suicide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We work with Mental Health Coalition alongside other industry peers as a founding member of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/09\/preventing-suicide-and-self-harm-content-spreading-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allows tech companies to share signals about violating suicide or self-harm content and stop it spreading across different platforms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Plaintiffs\u2019 Lawyers Ignore<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media provides important benefits for teens. It can create a sense of belonging, especially for those who might struggle to find community elsewhere. It can open opportunities that they wouldn\u2019t have had otherwise, like helping them grow a following for their art or music pursuits, show their athletic talents to potential recruiters, or even start a small business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science backs this up. As well as showing that social media does not have a population-level impact on adolescent mental health, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/our-work\/assessment-of-the-impact-of-social-media-on-the-health-and-wellbeing-of-adolescents-and-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consensus report devotes an entire chapter to the potential benefits of social media for teens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also new evidence that rates of teen depression, suicidal thoughts, and behaviors in the US has begun to decline, even as social media usage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2025\/12\/09\/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases or stays the same<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt56287\/2024-nsduh-annual-national-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prevalence of major depressive episodes among 12-to-17-year-olds fell from 21% in 2021 to 15% in 2024. Serious suicidal thoughts in 12-to-17-year-olds fell from nearly 13% in 2021 to 10% in 2024.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While social media might be a convenient target, if we ignore the many other factors that affect teens\u2019 well-being, we might miss an opportunity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44220-023-00063-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">address root causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could actually be more impactful, such as academic pressure, family dynamics, and school safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any honest conversation about teen well-being must consider the scientific data, as well as potential risks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits \u2014 not just headlines or anecdotes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Continuing to Put Teens and Families First<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers will try to paint an intentionally misleading picture of Meta with cherry-picked quotes and snippets of conversations taken out of context. The full record will show a company that has consistently put teen safety ahead of growth for over a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve made countless decisions to keep teens safe that could hurt engagement and growth, like making all teen accounts private by default, and allowing parents to place time restrictions on their teen\u2019s Instagram usage. With Teen Accounts, teens who were placed into the new protections saw less sensitive content, experienced less unwanted contact, and spent less time on Instagram over night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These restrictions may hurt our bottom line \u2014 and they\u2019re not always popular with teens either. But we put them in place anyway because they are the right thing to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re proud of our record. We will defend ourselves in court against claims that misrepresent the facts and ignore the work we\u2019ve done.
