{"id":22391,"date":"2026-07-08T20:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scannn.com\/breaking-ground-on-metas-first-data-center-in-canada\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T20:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:58:10","slug":"breaking-ground-on-metas-first-data-center-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scannn.com\/lv\/breaking-ground-on-metas-first-data-center-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking Ground on Meta\u2019s First Data Center in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re breaking ground on a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/06\/what-is-compute-power-meta-ai-infrastructure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1GW data center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Sturgeon County, Alberta \u2014 our first data center in Canada and 33rd in our global fleet. This data center will be optimized for our AI workloads, helping bring to life the technologies that billions around the world use to connect, find communities, grow businesses, and experience the power of our wearables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Investing in Sturgeon County<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once complete, our Sturgeon County data center will represent an investment of more than CAD $13 billion. We anticipate approximately 3,000 construction workers will be onsite at the peak of construction, and the data center will support more than 300 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/06\/americas-workforce-academy-free-skilled-trade-training\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">operational jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re also investing approximately CAD $60 million in local infrastructure improvements that will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/03\/meta-data-centers-support-energy-jobs-environment-local-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">benefit the local community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including roads and water infrastructure, and will launch our annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/03\/metas-data-center-grants-fueling-innovation-in-local-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data Center Community Action Grants <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the region, providing direct funding for local nonprofits that support the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Supporting the Electrical Grid<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We pay the full costs of our data centers\u2019 energy use so consumers aren\u2019t negatively impacted, and fund new and upgraded infrastructure. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We worked closely with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to plan for and meet our energy needs years in advance of this data center coming online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Alberta, we are fully funding new generation and grid infrastructure to support our data center, which will improve reliability across the entire Alberta grid and will benefit all consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As with all of our data centers, this data center\u2019s electricity use will be matched with 100% clean and renewable energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Prioritizing Water Stewardship<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We strive to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/12\/advancing-water-stewardship-in-metas-data-center-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">good water stewards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in communities where we have data centers, and Meta aims to be water positive in 2030, meaning we\u2019ll restore more water than we consume globally where Meta has owned operations. That\u2019s why we minimize water use in our data centers by design and use water as efficiently as possible in our operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At our Sturgeon data center, we plan to use a water efficient closed-loop, liquid-cooled system with dry cooling, which means there will be no operational water use in the cooling system. As a result, water use at the site will be limited to domestic uses, fire protection safety, and equipment maintenance.
