Almost nobody has the data. So this week, no frameworks, no formats, just one question answered properly: what do external links actually cost you on LinkedIn, and what do the people who get it right do differently. Fresh numbers from 300,000 posts published between March and June below, including one stat that reversed completely since April.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h3><span class=\"\">External Links Are Not Killing Your Reach. Your Strategy Is.<\/span><!----><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">LinkedIn is not your traffic trampoline. It was never built to bounce people off to your website, and it never will be. It exists to keep people reading, scrolling, commenting, and coming back tomorrow. That is the entire business model. More time on platform means more ad inventory, more data, more reasons to keep the feed running.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">So when creators ask why LinkedIn would penalize a post with an outbound link, the honest answer is: because not penalizing it would be irrational for the platform. Someone clicks away, they usually don&#8217;t come back to comment, like, or save. Less signal. Less reach next time. That&#8217;s a business model doing exactly what it was built to do.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Ask ten creators about external links and you&#8217;ll get ten confident, contradictory answers. Half will tell you links are algorithmic poison. The other half swear it&#8217;s a myth invented by people who never tested it properly. Both groups are a little bit right, which is exactly the problem. Nobody is looking at the actual data, they&#8217;re repeating whatever worked once, in one post, under conditions they never isolated.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">I always laugh when I see people posting things like &#8220;I interviewed Head of Product and she said LinkedIn is not penalizing posts with links&#8221;. Sure, what were you thinking?<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">LinkedIn will never give you the clean confession everyone wants. It will <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">not<\/span><span class=\"\"> say, <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">\u201cYes, we suppress external links because they reduce session time and lower platform value.\u201d<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">What it <\/span><span class=\"italic font-[700]\">will<\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\"> say<\/span><span class=\"\"> is that links should be <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">used strategically, and that visibility depends on relevance and engagement<\/span><span class=\"\">. Which is technically true, but also wonderfully convenient.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">That\u2019s why this debate never ends. The platform can always describe the behavior in polite language while creators keep reverse-engineering the actual effect.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">So let&#8217;s settle this properly, using fresh data from our ongoing algorithm study of close to 300,000 posts published between March and June 2026.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h3><span class=\"\">Myth 1: &#8220;Links kill your reach. Full stop.&#8221;<\/span><!----><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Half true, and the half that&#8217;s true is worse than most people think.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">A single external link now costs a post 16% of its reach. That&#8217;s down slightly from the 18.8% we measured in April, but don&#8217;t mistake that for the algorithm softening. It&#8217;s still one in six people who would have seen your post never seeing it, purely because a URL sits in the caption.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">But that&#8217;s not the whole story, which is why this myth only earns a half true, not a full one.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h3><span class=\"\">Myth 2: &#8220;Stack a few links together and the penalty gets diluted.&#8221;<\/span><!----><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">This is the one that just flipped, and it&#8217;s worth paying attention to because it shows how fast this platform moves.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">A few months ago, adding a second or third link actually recovered some of that reach. It doesn&#8217;t anymore, not the way it used to. A second or third link now brings the penalty down slightly, to around 7% below baseline, which is an improvement over one link but nowhere near the free pass it once was. Push past that to three or more links and the penalty reverses hard, landing at 24% below baseline, worse than a single link, not better.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col mt-2\" data-test-id=\"publishing-image-block\" rel=\"ugc\">\n<figure>\n        <br \/>\n<!---->      <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Six weeks ago, link clustering looked like it signaled a comprehensive resource. For some reason LinkedIn has now closed that gap. Whatever you were told about &#8220;more links reading as more value&#8221; needs to be retired starting today.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h3><span class=\"\">Myth 3: &#8220;Put the link in the first comment. It protects your reach.&#8221;<\/span><!----><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">This used to be true. It isn&#8217;t anymore, and clinging to it is actively costing people conversions.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">LinkedIn now actively hides comments that contain links, from everyone except the author. In up to 80% of all cases it will not be shown when filtered (the default setting) on &#8220;relevance&#8221;.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col mt-2\" data-test-id=\"publishing-image-block\" rel=\"ugc\">\n<figure>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Article content\" class=\"lazy-load block w-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/D4E12AQF7MdgVu38twQ\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/B4EZ.d8C.NIwAQ-\/0\/1785061192342?e=2147483647&amp;v=beta&amp;t=t5jx3FRUPdBHHzdIalBtgOzzA_NzVOIBpQK4GVNQu5g\"\/><br \/>\n<!---->      <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">You&#8217;ll still see your own comment sitting there looking perfectly normal, which is exactly why so many creators haven&#8217;t noticed this is happening. Your audience hasn&#8217;t. They now <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">need up to four additional clicks <\/span><span class=\"\">just to surface that comment, and by the time someone&#8217;s clicked through four times, you&#8217;ve <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">already lost 90% of the people who were originally interested. <\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Worse, the conversion gap has widened too. A <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">link placed in the original post now converts 5.2 times better than the same link dropped in the comments<\/span><span class=\"\">. You&#8217;re not just suppressing visibility with this tactic anymore. You&#8217;re actively working against the outcome you wanted in the first place.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">If someone is still telling you to hide your link in the comments in 2026, they&#8217;re giving you advice that&#8217;s not just outdated, it&#8217;s now actively backfiring.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h3><span class=\"\">Myth 4: &#8220;Publish clean, then sneak the link in after it gains traction.&#8221;<\/span><!----><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">The edit-after tactic. Post without a link, let it build momentum, then quietly drop the URL in once the algorithm has already committed to distributing it.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">It can work, briefly. But it has a ceiling. It doesn&#8217;t reliably preserve performance once the edit lands, and the moment your audience notices the bait and switch, you&#8217;ve traded a short-term reach hack for a long-term trust problem. This is a tactic, not a system. Anyone building their content strategy around it is building on borrowed time.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">In addition some edits can lead to a direct &#8220;shadow ban&#8221; of your post. That&#8217;s why should never edit more than 5% of your original copy. Typo, sure! Entire paragraphs, adding links. Be careful.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h2 data-test-id=\"pulse-publishing-h1\">\n            <span class=\"\">Not all links are equal: extractive vs additive<\/span><!----><br \/>\n          <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Now, let&#8217;s have a look at &#8211; for me &#8211; one of the most important conclusions. A direct sales link is usually the worst offender. It&#8217;s obviously selfish, and people feel the pitch before they even click. That changes behavior, and the data backs it up hard.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"font-[700]\">Extractive links<\/span><span class=\"\">, the ones that exist purely to sell, <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">get a click rate 2.9 times lower<\/span><span class=\"\"> than informational ones. But the real damage shows up in comments. Extractive links generate almost no additional comments, and often negative ones. <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">Additive links<\/span><span class=\"\">, the kind that deepen an insight rather than cash it in, <\/span><span class=\"font-[700]\">generate up to 9 times more comments<\/span><span class=\"\">, especially when people genuinely valued what they just read.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Sales link: extractive. It takes attention and gives nothing back until after the click. Informational link: additive. It gives value first and the click becomes optional, not required.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">That distinction should decide how you write the two sentences before your link, every time.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<p><h2 data-test-id=\"pulse-publishing-h1\">\n            <span class=\"\">If conversion is the goal, stop putting all the burden on the post<\/span><!----><br \/>\n          <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">Most creators try to make one post do everything: build authority, spark comments, drive traffic, capture a lead, and sell the offer. That&#8217;s a confused brief, and it&#8217;s why so many posts underperform on every single one of those goals at once.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"\">The smarter move is either to go all in for conversion and forget about impressions or to stop asking the post to convert and start giving people a native destination that can.<\/span><!---->\n        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!----><!---->                  <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\">\n<p>\n          <span class=\"font-[700]\">1.
