The other side of that thesis is control.<\/p>\n<p>An AI agent connected to a crypto wallet is fundamentally different from a chatbot. It can call external tools, execute multi-step instructions, interact with smart contracts and potentially move assets without waiting for a human at every step.<\/p>\n<p>Model intelligence is not the same thing as financial safety. Permission is the real attack surface.<\/p>\n<p>A weak model with unrestricted wallet access can cause more damage than a powerful model operating inside a tightly constrained environment.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto makes this hard because the market never closes and blockchain transactions are generally irreversible. There is no bank employee to call at 3 a.m. and no chargeback after a malicious transaction settles.<\/p>\n<p>So an agent should never have one giant permission set that lets it create wallets, change withdrawal addresses, approve contracts and transfer funds by itself.<\/p>\n<p>A safer architecture looks more like traditional financial controls adapted for blockchains:<\/p>\n<p>\u2192 transaction limits<br \/>\u2192 multisig approval<br \/>\u2192 hardware security modules<br \/>\u2192 delayed settlement<br \/>\u2192 address whitelists<br \/>\u2192 contract simulation before execution<br \/>\u2192 restricted token approvals<br \/>\u2192 detailed logs of instructions, proposed transactions and executed transactions<\/p>\n<p>A human shouldn\u2019t be asked to blindly confirm \u201csystem operation.\u201d They should see the recipient, asset, amount, network, gas cost and purpose before signing.<\/p>\n<p>I love the fact that AI-agent risk is no longer purely an AI problem.<\/p>\n<p>It sits at the intersection of AI security, wallet custody, smart-contract permissions, governance, accounting and treasury management, and the scale difference is worth remembering:<\/p>\n<p>AI agents reportedly settled only about $73M in on-chain payments between May 2025 and April 2026, while stablecoins processed roughly $46T in settlement during the same period.<\/p>\n<p>The agent economy is still tiny.<\/p>\n<p>That gives the industry a window to build the controls before autonomous systems start managing materially larger amounts of capital.<\/p>\n<p>The next phase of AI \u00d7 crypto will also be defined by what they are not allowed to do.<br \/>\n        <sup class=\"tw-permalink\"><i class=\"fas fa-link\"\/><\/sup>\n      <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/2089638586211590454.html?utm_source=tldrcrypto\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I wrote about AI agents becoming economic actors.
