It probably didn\u2019t need the money, but the round was buying something bigger than impressive growth*. The round bought a coherent story about becoming AI-native.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">Every investor, especially the growth investor, is looking for companies that benefit from AI\u2019s rapid take-off and become more durable because of it. They are looking for the beneficiary, and trying not to own the victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">I spoke to three founders this week. All three were close to raising very large rounds on the basis of being AI-native. All three asked me some version of the same thing:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">How should we position ourselves as AI native? What should our product be?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">They were asking a positioning question. I think the answer is a product question.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fintechnerdcon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">Fintech Nerdcon<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"> is BACK. They hire it to do a <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><em>job<\/em><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">Jobs to be Done in finance include, file my expenses, reconcile my invoices and help me manage fraud. Those jobs predate AI. Modern models can do parts of them faster, cheaper and with fewer humans in the loop, but the customer woke up wanting the same thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">AI created a second kind of job too. Watch my token spend. Route every inference request to the best model. Let my agent buy something without giving it my whole identity and bank account.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">Nobody had those jobs before AI gave them the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"hynlcx1 hynlcx4\" translations=\"[object Object]\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><span style=\"color:#434343;font-family:inherit;--font-size:100%;--mobile-font-size:inherit\">AI-native describes the product. Nubank uses NuFormer to make better credit decisions, but underwriting is an ancient banking job.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">The bottom-left is where <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fintechbrainfood.com\/p\/the-benchmark-will-eat-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">Harvey, Hebbia and Rogo<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0sit: products that could not have existed before modern models, doing legal and financial-research jobs that absolutely did.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">The right-hand side is where the tailwind lives. Ramp and Stripe already had businesses when AI handed their customers new things to buy. OpenRouter and fal only make sense because inference became an industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">This also means a company can occupy more than one square. Ramp\u2019s spend product is top-left. Its token dashboard and Router are top-right. Stripe\u2019s payments business is top-left; Metronome and OpenRouter drag it across the table. Things rarely fit neatly into a 2&#215;2.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">So allow me to throw another concept at you.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">I find three labels useful for describing the <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><em>posture<\/em><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0of the company:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vl18bi0\">\n<ol class=\"vl18bi1\" translations=\"[object Object]\" start=\"1\">\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>Adopters use AI to serve the demand they already had.<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0Maybe they added a co-pilot. There is real value here. They can become faster, cheaper and leaner, but the sales pipeline is structurally the same. This is most SaaS companies that bolted on an agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>Beneficiaries serve those old jobs better and capture new demand AI created next door.<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0Ramp or Stripe is the cleanest example. Spend management remains the core job; token cost management and model routing are new revenue pockets sitting beside it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>Natives exist because of the new demand. <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">OpenRouter routes requests across more than 400 models. fal runs generative-media inference at enormous scale. Neither has a business in a world without inference to sell.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">The map tells you where the demand comes from.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">The jobs tell you where they opportunities might be. Progression to being AI native comes on a ladder: familiar at the bottom, gloriously unsolved at the top. So take a climb with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"hynlcx1 hynlcx4\" translations=\"[object Object]\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><span style=\"color:#434343;font-family:inherit;--font-size:100%;--mobile-font-size:inherit\">Pre-requisite: Run yourself with AI<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">AI-powered operating models change the shape, governance and operating system of a company. Teams build harnesses around employees that plug into internal data, share skills and change who can do what. Product managers and designers ship code. Engineers move further into product. Teams build their own internal tools. (For more, see the <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fintechbrainfood.com\/p\/enterprise-ai-playbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">AI Operating Model report<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">This is table stakes. It speeds you up. It doesn\u2019t, on its own, change what you sell.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"hynlcx1 hynlcx4\" translations=\"[object Object]\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><span style=\"color:#434343;font-family:inherit;--font-size:100%;--mobile-font-size:inherit\">Rung 1: Old jobs, done better with AI<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>Some AI-native products serve very old jobs. That doesn\u2019t make them less native.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">Compliance screening, document and email reconciliation, legal research and financial reporting were all messy paperwork problems before AI arrived. Beacon, Sardine*, Gradient Labs, Harvey, Hebbia and Rogo use modern models to pull together hundreds of documents and data sources, then produce an answer or manage the workflow. The product would have been impossible a few years ago. The job is ancient<\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"hynlcx1 hynlcx4\" translations=\"[object Object]\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><span style=\"color:#434343;font-family:inherit;--font-size:100%;--mobile-font-size:inherit\">Rung 2: New jobs next to your core<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">If what you do is manage spend, accounts, or help people make payments, the old customer jobs still exist, but there are some new ones near them too. There are a few flavors of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dream-post-content-bulletList _1ao94nj0\">\n<ul translations=\"[object Object]\" class=\"_1ao94nj1\">\n<li class=\"_11av8sw0\" translations=\"[object Object]\">\n<div class=\"j6zgbu0\">\n<p class=\"dream-post-content-paragraph j6zgbu1\"><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><strong>Job: Help me manage my AI usage.<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ramp.com\/ai-cost-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">Ramp\u2019s token dashboard<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0is an AI-created job living inside a product that already existed. You might object that a cost dashboard is hardly new. <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vantage.sh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">Vantage<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0and <\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datadoghq.com\/product\/cloud-cost-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" class=\"_3k8pkd0\">Datadog<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hxnnnr0\">\u00a0have priced cloud and compute spend for years. The difference is the bill. Nobody had token costs to categorize, forecast or split between COGS and OpEx until AI handed them one.
