Source: Microsoft<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>You see how this looks, right?<\/em> The easy <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/apps\/develop\/ai-assisted\/quickstart\">30-minute guide<\/a> is basically a hook to lure beginner developers into making apps for Windows 11 without having to do the \u201chard work\u201d of coding. I support this because the Microsoft Store could use some WinUI apps!<\/p>\n<p>Now anyone can create a new WinUI app with AI, have an agent add features, test the result, package it as MSIX, and submit it to the Microsoft Store, all for free and with minimal effort. The WinUI agent ships with specialized skills for WinUI design, code review, UI testing, packaging, and framework migration.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft also recommends connecting the agent to its <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/apps\/develop\/ai-assisted\/vs-code-tools#microsoft-learn-mcp-server\">Learn MCP server<\/a>, so it pulls current WinUI API documentation at query time. Considering the lower popularity of WinUI 3, it is fair to assume that AI models have years more training material on WPF and UWP.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/apps\/develop\/ai-assisted\/migrate\/wpf-to-winui\">WPF migration guide<\/a> doesn\u2019t pretend this is a find-and-replace job. <em>System.Windows.*<\/em><em> becomes <\/em><em>Microsoft.UI.Xaml.*<\/em><em>,<\/em> and Microsoft hands the AI agent a full substitution table covering controls, threading, window management, DPI handling, and data binding, plus a starter prompt telling it what to flag.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/apps\/develop\/ai-assisted\/migrate\/uwp-to-winui\">migration guide for UWP to WinUI 3<\/a> starts by saying that the former is no longer under active development and that WinUI 3 and the Windows App SDK are its successors. Interestingly, the guide warns that AI models trained on years of UWP samples will keep reproducing those patterns unless the migration skill gives them explicit substitutions to follow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-89537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP.png\" alt=\"Universal Windows Platform (UWP)\" width=\"990\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP.png 990w, https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP-696x348.png 696w, https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Universal-Windows-Platform-UWP-840x420.png 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is essentially trying to lower the cost of moving its enormous existing library of WPF and UWP software onto the new native framework.<\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft also wants WinUI to replace the web-app mess<\/h2>\n<p>Windows keeps getting web apps instead of native ones because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/04\/07\/developer-explains-why-windows-11-keeps-getting-web-apps-instead-of-native-apps\/\">cross-platform web frameworks are cheaper to build for<\/a>, letting developers reuse code across platforms instead of writing for a Windows framework that may change in the future, like it already did multiple times in the past.<\/p>\n<p>At Build 2026, Microsoft made a strong commitment to changing that perception, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/06\/04\/microsoft-is-killing-windows-11s-web-app-slop-encourages-devs-to-build-native-apps-using-winui\/\">calling WinUI the \u201cproduction platform for Windows apps\u201d and dropping the \u201c3\u201d from its name<\/a> to tell the developer community that they won\u2019t replace the framework again.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft also committed to lower memory usage, DataGrid and charting support, better WPF interop, and more open-source participation. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/08\/29\/windows-11s-native-app-era-is-coming-back-after-years-of-web-app-slop-and-microsoft-is-finally-building-it-in-public\/\">WinUI is now fully open source<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just for app development. The company has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/07\/30\/a-major-windows-11-ui-redesign-is-coming-microsoft-is-dumping-legacy-code-for-winui\/\">replacing pieces of Windows 11\u2019s legacy interface with WinUI 3<\/a>, with the most recent being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/08\/06\/microsoft-is-burying-windows-11s-legacy-ui-one-by-one-and-autoplay-is-next-for-winui-3\/\">AutoPlay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/08\/17\/microsoft-just-rebuilt-one-of-windows-11s-oldest-tools-in-modern-ui-rollout-starts-in-the-next-few-days\/\">Print Management<\/a>, and more in the pipeline.
