Yesterday I wrote about AI agents becoming economic actors. The other side of that thesis is control.

An AI agent connected to a crypto wallet is fundamentally different from a chatbot. It can call external tools, execute multi-step instructions, interact with smart contracts and potentially move assets without waiting for a human at every step.

Model intelligence is not the same thing as financial safety. Permission is the real attack surface.

A weak model with unrestricted wallet access can cause more damage than a powerful model operating inside a tightly constrained environment.

Crypto makes this hard because the market never closes and blockchain transactions are generally irreversible. There is no bank employee to call at 3 a.m. and no chargeback after a malicious transaction settles.

So an agent should never have one giant permission set that lets it create wallets, change withdrawal addresses, approve contracts and transfer funds by itself.

A safer architecture looks more like traditional financial controls adapted for blockchains:

→ transaction limits
→ multisig approval
→ hardware security modules
→ delayed settlement
→ address whitelists
→ contract simulation before execution
→ restricted token approvals
→ detailed logs of instructions, proposed transactions and executed transactions

A human shouldn’t be asked to blindly confirm “system operation.” They should see the recipient, asset, amount, network, gas cost and purpose before signing.

I love the fact that AI-agent risk is no longer purely an AI problem.

It sits at the intersection of AI security, wallet custody, smart-contract permissions, governance, accounting and treasury management, and the scale difference is worth remembering:

AI agents reportedly settled only about $73M in on-chain payments between May 2025 and April 2026, while stablecoins processed roughly $46T in settlement during the same period.

The agent economy is still tiny.

That gives the industry a window to build the controls before autonomous systems start managing materially larger amounts of capital.

The next phase of AI × crypto will also be defined by what they are not allowed to do.
